In 2010, Father Joseph Ciarciaglino, founder and pastor of Saint Philip the Apostle parish here, traveled to northern Uganda as part of an Orthodox Christian Missions Center medical team. While there, he was appalled at the almost nonexistent medical services available to the residents of the war torn northern part of this central African nation. Malaria and intestinal worms were pandemic. Infant mortality was ten times that of the US and life expectancy was 54 years. Father Joseph was horrified to hear one of the team translators tell the triage nurse, “He knows that he is filled with worms because he can feel them moving around.”
