The House That God Built: Session III: God’s Family
Ready:
You will need one small gardening glove per child (Dollar stores are great resources!),
flexi/craft foam shapes, glue, 10 velcro adhesive tabs sets per child, copy
of the song, “Come
and Pray” sung to the tune, “Where is Thumbkin?”
Set:
With this activity we want the children to identify people in the church that
make up God’s family.
Go!:
Use the foam shapes to create representations of ten people they may encounter
in the church. The song mentions the Bishop, Priest, Deacon, Altar Boy, Handmaiden,
Church School Teacher, Music leader, Warden, Priest’s Wife and Parishioner.
Stick the soft side of the Velcro tabs to the front and back of each finger
of the glove and the other Velcro to the back of each finger puppet.
When the figures are dry you can sing, “Come and Pray” adding a person to the glove for each verse.
Before, during and after the activity:
- Discuss the types of people they know in church.
- Explain the different jobs each one has; Bishop leads the church, Priest takes care of his community, deacon/altar boys help things go smoothly, etc.
- Make the connection
between their home and church that people don’t always get along but
they love each other and forgive.
