On Friday and Saturday, June 13-14, 2014, the faithful of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary Church, Cumberland, RI, welcomed His Beatitude, Metropolitan Tikhon and His Eminence, Archbishop Nikon for the celebration of the completion of the first phase of the restoration of the parish’s historic church. The hierarchs were welcomed by Archpriest Vasily Lickwar, Rector, and the parish faithful, who filled the church for the services.
Established by immigrants from the Austro-Hungarian and Russian Empires as a community of the North American Ecclesiastical Mission on March 25, 1907, the parish was organized by Archpriest Jacob Grigorieff under the pastoral guidance of Archpriest Alexander Hotovitsky, who was canonized in 1994. The church was consecrated on September 3, 1908, by His Eminence, Archbishop Platon [Rozhdestvensky] of North America and the Aleutian Islands.
